Sunburn, Melanoma And Scouts |

You only get one skin to last a lifetime. Take care of it now, so that it can take care of you later. If you visit any victim of malignant melanoma and ask them if the bronzed look is worth the repeated surgeries, hospitalization, chemo-therapy, suffering, expense, loss of good health, disfigurement and risk of premature death they are continually experiencing, they will tell you that the "great tan" just isn’t worth it. |

This is the time of year when many troops are welcoming new Scouts into their ranks. This is an exciting time for the youth, as they face summertime hikes, adventures, and backpacking trips. However many of the new boys either have not been backpacking before, do not have properly fitting backpacks, or both. |

There are many lovely things about nature: beautiful sunsets, balmy breezes through the willows, crickets and frogs singing in the darkness. Not all is safe, however, as Mother Nature takes care of her children. Even plants have ways to defend themselves. Since they cannot run from predators, they must devise other strategies for keeping safe: so thorns and spines abound, and noxious smells and tastes help the plants to survive. |

Coping with Scouts at camp can be challenging. When you add attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), challenging doesn’t even begin to describe the experience!
I would never knowingly take a Scout with ADHD to camp without first interviewing his parents regarding their experiences. Each person who has ADHD is affected differently by it; therefore, the parents can be your best guides regarding coping tips for their specific child. Provide a typical day’s schedule and ask for their advice. |
