Internationally, scouting recognizes Lord Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell of Gilwell (1857-1941) as its founder.
Fighting for the Queens army, Baden-Powell (B-P), became a war hero and upon his return to England found that a training manual he'd written was being used by boys to learn about the outdoors.
Brownsea Island is the place B-P took 22 scraggly, rough and tumble, youth, from public schools on an experimental adventure to produce scouting's first summer camp experience.
-- American Scouting Digest will be publishing articles about the foundations of scouting on an ongoing basis. Check back often for a continuing look at the origins of B-P's great vision for the youth of the world.
